On this Giving Tuesday, I hope you’ll consider contributing to one or more of these charitable child welfare organizations with which I’m involved.
Kids Alive International provides education and care to abused and at-risk children around the world. I got to know them in Guatemala, where I came to admire the work they were doing caring for and providing therapy for sexually abused girls, reuniting them with family and community, and helping to prosecute those who had offended against them. The New York Times featured their Guatemala operations a few years ago.
Wellroot, which used to be the Methodist Home for Children in North Georgia, is now focused on providing foster care and community-based care for children as well as young people who are aging out of the foster care system. Their most recent work includes starting innovative family therapy programs for at-risk children and families in North Georgia and purchasing an apartment complex to house youth aging out of foster care.
Connections Homes provides mentoring families for youth aging out of foster care. These young people need connections, and CH finds families who will provide them the support, love, and guidance that all young people need. Their model is one of the most exciting I’ve seen, and they are expanding nationwide.
Restoration Rome is an innovative partner for many child-serving organizations in the Rome, Georgia, area and is also the state’s leader in providing Trust-Based Relational Intervention training that teaches professionals how to better serve the needs of children who have suffered complex trauma.
Fostering Impact is a brand-new nonprofit that I’ve helped start. We have long needed in Georgia an organization that can advocate for children in foster care and their foster parents or relative caregivers. Fostering Impact’s goal is to advocate for policies and laws that bring the voices of children in care, foster parents, families, and caregivers to the table so that children can find safe, stable permanency more quickly.
