News of the child protection world……
This story from the New York Times about abusive child deaths in NYC is tragic and, at least to me, serves as a reminder that most abusive deaths are more likely to result from lack of information-sharing as by any failures on the part of one person or agency. I’d like to know what their data-sharing agreements and technology look like.
Why are we arresting children for drawing pictures? Sounds like something that might happen in this judge’s jurisdiction.
Kentucky has a population of 4.4 million but almost 10,000 children in foster care. I’m sure the opioid crisis has contributed to that, but it seems like a high number. Georgia, for example, has 10.2 million residents and about the same number of children in care. While states all differ, it’s helpful to compare foster care rates and see what is driving those rates.
Amid the tragedy, there’s hope. Organizations such as this one in Ohio are empowering churches and individuals to support foster parents as well as intact families who are struggling and involved with child welfare services. They demonstrate that you don’t have to be a foster parent to help children in foster care! Promise 686, Called to Care, and Chosen for Life are a few others that are doing this good work.
Here’s a good op-ed on the IMD exclusion problem with FFPSA and how we need a Congressional fix. If you want more information on this issue, email me.
What do y’all think about this story? Should parents who don’t want to vaccinate their children for Covid be reported for maltreatment? Have y’all heard of parents being reported for refusing the vaccine?
More proof that being a child protective services worker is challenging work no matter what country you’re in.
Following up on the NYC bill I told you about last week that would require CPS workers to advise parents of their rights, it seems the NYC Administration for Children and Families is opposed. Advocates are calling the blocking of the legislation a win for systemic racism.
That’s the news I found interesting! If you see anything I should’ve included, please let me know. Ideas and subscriptions are always appreciated!
